While visiting with friends I realize our time together is often shorter that we plan. How to savour those moments and share our memories is always my challange. I don't usually get to worked up about moves, coming and going of friends, but how can we be sure to maintain those special friendships from a distance. Any thoughts?
One way I have tried to commemorate my relationship with people is through quilting. Finding the right pattern to complement their home, an occasion or their personality. My Mother-in-law was the lady in purple. Any stranger could have picked her up at the airport as she was always decked out in Purple when traveling. My hubby the reader often pairs that with watching sports in the basement where the tempurature is a standard 67 degrees F. So for Him I made a muted rendition of Rail a Fence that just happens to match both upstairs and down. This was my first Jelly-roll quilt and let me tell you I could get hooked really easy. I have some Ideas for others. The Star Spangled Banner for my dear friend Polly's birthday was a favorite in the table runner catagory. It was just perfect that her birthday was the day before July 4th and she is America. I think homemade/handmade gifts are always the best. THey show we have put some thought into the creation and give a little of ourselves for the keeping.
While preparing for the students to return I am in the midst of reading 2 great resources, The Heart of a Mentor, by David A Stoddard and Laugh at the Days to come, A Mother's Commentary on Proverbs 31 by Ellen Hooge. Both of these books will be helpful resources for the comming year with the new thrust for mentoring relationships.
I am looking forward to once again finding the person who wants to learn to quilt. It is so much fun to share patterns and colour with others.

Hey! I was being a blog stalker and I found your blog from Lissa's blog so I thought I'd say hello!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you loved quilting so much! You should post some pictures of some of the things you've made!
I agree that homemade gifts are the best... it's fun to spend so much time working on something you just know will 'fit' the person you're making it for... and it's always fun when you get to see their reaction!
It's also really neat that you are developing a passion for mentoring! I am sure that you are a wonderful mentor! I have a great one here in Japan and I'm realizing just how important mentors really are... good for you for taking on this ministry!
anyway, hope things are going well for you! have a great weekend!
Thanks Hill, this is kinda fun but I will see how faithful I am. Lis just helped me figureout the photo thing lst night but my photos are on my office comuter so i willhave to wait until Monday. i have been working of Placemats alrady for the christmas Craft sale. I think these first ones are nice but a bit small. I may add a boarder to the next ones.
ReplyDeleteI will pray for you as you stay with your family. How exciting for you. I just met a new family from Quebec last weekend and made sure to look them up this week. I invited her over to pick cherries and she came. That made me happy. There is a definite language barrier but I do have a very basic french vocab so no sentences but at least a few words make sense.
Bless you as you continue to learn more about the culture and language in japan.
